Choreographer and dancer,
artistic director of the Blanca Li's Company

Born in Granada, Spain, she began her performing career at the age of twelve with the Spanish national rhythmic gymnastics team. At seventeen, she joined the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance in New York. She studied there for five years and also took classes with Paul Sanasardo and Alvin Ailey.
On her return to Spain, she founded her first company in Madrid, which was selected for the Universal Exhibition in Seville.
She settled in Paris and in 1993, inspired by her trips to North Africa, presented "Nana et Lila" - for 8 dancers and 5 Moroccan Gnawa musicians - at the Avignon Festival. In 1994, the ballet was also performed at the Trianon Theater in Paris, as well as in other European countries and in North Africa.
"Salomé", a show mixing flamenco, circus and cabaret with theater and contemporary dance, was created in 1995 at the Quartz Theater in Brest and confirmed Blanca Li's special place among new choreographers.
"Stress" was created at the Jean Vilar Theater in Suresnes in 1997 and was a sell-out during its three-week run at the Bastille Theater in the French capital.
Blanca was then hired to direct the production of "La Vie brève" and "L'Amour sorcier" by Manuel de Falla at the Nancy Opera in May 1997.
In 1998, she opened a choreographic center in Paris, a space created for the company's rehearsals and also opened to theatre and dance professionals.
In April 1998, she directed her first short movie, "Angoisse ". Fuji Award at 22nd Grenoble Short Film Festival, Special Jury Award at 14th Brest Short Film Festival, Best Short Film 2000 and Best French Short Film 2000 Public's Award at 22nd Créteil International Festival.
In September 1998, she created "Le Songe du Minotaure ", inspired by ancient Greece, whose premiere took place at the Biennale de Lyon, then at Maison des Arts de Créteil.
Two months later, she directed and choreographed the world premiere of the opera "Un Tango pour M. Lautrec " by Jorge Zulueta and Jacobo Romano at the Nancy Opera.
She was invited by the Jean Vilar Theater in Suresnes in January 1999 to present a new choreographic creation, "Macadam Macadam", with hip-hop and street dancers and performers. After an international tour, the show was programmed for two weeks at Paris' Opera Comique.
In September 1999, she signed the choreography for the opera "Les Indes Galantes" by Rameau, conducted by William Christie and staged by Andrei Serban at the Opera Garnier in Paris. This program is now part of the Paris Opera repertoire.
"Zap! Zap! Zap! ", a one-woman show directed and performed by herself, was created in Nanterre and then presented in Nice, at the Chaillot National Theater in Paris and at the Kitchen in New York.
In July 2000, the principal dancer of the Paris Opera Monique Loudières commissioned a solo, "Silhouette", which was presented at the Avignon Festival.
She presents "Sheherazade" which she's been invited to choreograph for the Opera Garnier company in December 2001. Her new ballet, "Borderline", will be created in June 2002 at the Berlin Komische Oper.
Blanca's first feature film "Le Défi", based on the world of hip hop, is released in May 2002.
In April 2001, Blanca Li has been nominated director and choreographer of the Berlin Ballet at the Komische Oper. Of course, based in Paris, the Blanca Li Company keeps going.
